Description
In 1945, 36 healthy men in a basement under a football stadium agreed to be starved for science. Then the researchers fed them again, and the hunger didn't stop.
This video follows the Minnesota Starvation Experiment, led by physiologist Ancel Keys at the University of Minnesota, and asks the question the data raises: why didn't eating make the hunger go away?
In this video:
- The brochure that asked men to starve so that others could eat
- Why every volunteer was screened for stability first
- The 1,570-calorie ration and what was actually on the plate
- Cookbooks, hoarded kitchenware, and strangers watched through restaurant windows
- Franklin Watkins and the psychiatric ward
- Sam Legg and the woodpile
- Why the recovery phase was harder than anyone planned
- The fat overshoot nobody predicted
- What the study does and doesn't tell us about dieting today
A note on accuracy: "the Minnesota effect" is a label for the pattern, not an established scientific term. The experiment's severity (about a quarter of body weight lost in six months) was far beyond a typical diet, and the video is careful about that difference.
If you enjoyed this, a like helps more than you'd think. See you in the next one.
