Description
There are a lot of ethnic tensions going on in Nigeria today. There is anger against the Fulanis for example due to the terrorist activities of some of their kinsmen. The Ibos are all over the internet pointing fingers at other tribes as being the source of whatever problems they have.
Nigeria, as we know is a British experiment, it was cobbled together for the interest of Britain and not because of the interest of the different nations. At independence in 1960, i would have expected a referendum to have been conducted to actually ask the different nationalities a simple question? Do they want to be a part of the larger nation called Nigeria or would they rather be on their own. Supo, do you think this simple affirmation is still relevant, do you think Nigeria needs a referendum, a treaty that will actually bind us together, as it seems we are running a constitution now that was created thru a military edict.
The Ibos, thru their first republic nationalist leader Nnamdi Azikiwe, opposed a secession clause during the pre-independence talks that led to Nigerias federal constitution of 1959. Now, they are at the forefront of a breakup of Nigeria. Having fought a civil war, they are still unrelenting about their Biafra cause, their current secessionist leader Nnamdi Kanu is languishing in Sokoto prison for daring to lead the struggle, Supo, we saw that in Britain, the leaders of Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland have amicably notified Westminster of their intension to leave the UK. Why cant we have a referendum for the Ibos, for how long should we continue to ignore this agitation for self determination.
The Yorubas are busy trying to organise Nigeria into a regional structure, but we know that even that first republic regional confederation that they are now looking back at with nostalgia ended up in a civil war, so honestly, i think Nigeria should do the right thing, let the different Nations within Nigeria go back to their pre—colonial nation states so that we wont have to fight a second civil war.
Right now, as in 2023, we have 3 presidential contenders, one each from the 3 main regional blocks, and we have seen that the voting patterns roughly follow these regional blocks, does that no tell us that we are still different nations?
