Description

Japan’s Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line is a 15 km road connecting Kawasaki and Kisarazu. Part of the route crosses Tokyo Bay on a steel sea bridge, while nearly 10 km continues beneath the bay through twin tunnels. To build them, engineers used eight enormous 3,200-ton shield machines launched from three different locations. The machines excavated beneath the seabed while pressurized chambers prevented water and soil from collapsing into the tunnels. A remarkable combination of sea bridge, artificial islands and underwater engineering.
