Welcome to the Frugal Japan channel.

I’m turning one $5 Costco rotisserie chicken into three Japanese-inspired dinners, next-day lunchboxes, a crispy cook’s treat, golden chicken fat, and rich homemade broth—with almost nothing wasted.
I’ll show you how I give every part of the chicken a job, from the breast meat and legs to the skin, bones, and flavorful juices at the bottom of the container. I make comforting chicken-and-egg oyakodon, dark-meat takikomi gohan that becomes onigiri, and a warming tabletop nabe finished with egg zosui.
Along the way, I break down the complete cost and share the meaning of mottainai—the Japanese idea that it’s a shame to waste something valuable.
