Description
The part worth rewinding is the last thirty seconds. Palmer Luckey spots a man inside a building, and from that moment every drone and every soldier on the network sees him too. One person's sighting becomes everyone's sighting. His word for it is a combined hive mind.
The software doing that is called Lattice. It pulls in drones, sensors and other soldiers, fuses all of it into one picture, then pushes that picture back out to every person and machine connected to it. Anduril says a single operator can run swarms of autonomous systems from it.
This stopped being a demo a while ago. In March the Army signed an enterprise agreement for Lattice with a $20 billion maximum ordering value. Last week Anduril was awarded up to $1.8 billion over five years, starting with $162.8 million, to build out the data layer underneath the Army's Next Generation Command and Control system. First unit is I Corps, which commands four divisions and is pointed at the Pacific.
Then there's the other half of the picture. At an Army exercise in the Mojave Desert, the hardware ran so hot that soldiers wrapped it in t-shirts soaked in ice water to keep it going. The drones they were flying that day weren't connected to the network yet.
Two true things at once. The hive mind is real, and right now it needs a wet shirt to survive the desert.
