What started as demonstrations over deteriorating schools and education conditions has expanded into a much broader crisis, with blockades, clashes with police, arson, vandalism, and thousands of arrests. French authorities have described parts of the unrest as having developed into urban violence. And this is where I think the French government deserves serious criticism. People have the right to protest. They have the right to criticize their government. They have the right to organize. They do not have the right to burn buildings, attack people, destroy businesses, or turn entire neighborhoods into battlegrounds. Once a demonstration crosses that line, the government has a responsibility to restore order. That's the job of the state. And France is increasingly facing the consequences of allowing political and social tensions to escalate until ordinary people are caught in the middle. Schools have been blockaded. Buildings have been damaged or set on fire. Police have been attacked. Public infrastructure has been disrupted. And thousands of people have been arrested since the protests began. The French government needs to distinguish between peaceful protesters and people committing crimes, protect public institutions, and make sure that legitimate demonstrations don't become an excuse for widespread destruction. And eventually, France has to address the underlying reasons for the unrest as well. A government can't simply deploy riot police forever and expect social tensions to disappear. You need functioning institutions. You need public order. And you need a political system capable of addressing legitimate grievances before they turn into street violence. In this video, I react to Decoy's coverage, discuss the latest unrest in France, and examine why the government's handling of the situation has become such a serious problem. Because protesting your government is a right. Burning your country down isn't.
