The Randburg Magistrates’ Court heard on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, that the 18-year-old complainant has been experiencing suicidal thoughts and fears what could happen if Sibiya is released. A second complainant, a 16-year-old girl, also told the court that she fears for her safety and that of her family. The court heard allegations that someone approached the 18-year-old’s friend seeking a statement that would contradict her account. The friend allegedly refused. These claims form part of the concerns raised during the bail proceedings and must be distinguished from established findings. Sibiya’s defence has denied that he threatened witnesses or instructed anyone to interfere with them. His legal team has argued that he is not a flight risk and that bail conditions could address concerns about contact with witnesses. Sibiya faces charges including rape, sexual grooming, human trafficking and a firearm-related offence. He denies the allegations, and the charges have not been proved in court. In this video, we unpack: • The emotional statements read in court • Why the complainants fear Sibiya’s possible release • The alleged attempt to obtain a contradictory witness statement • Sibiya’s response to allegations of threats and interference • The key issues the court must consider when deciding bail THE BIG QUESTION: Should the court grant Shadrack Sibiya bail, or do the safety concerns raised by the complainants weigh against his release?
