Description

In 1977, Assata Shakur was convicted of the murder of a New Jersey State Trooper. Decades later, her case continues to raise difficult questions about justice, political repression, and the treatment of Black activists in America. In this documentary, we examine Assata Shakur’s own words, her involvement in the Black Panther Party, the FBI’s COINTELPRO program, the controversial circumstances surrounding her trial, and the decades she spent in exile in Cuba. Her story is often reduced to two opposing narratives: a convicted fugitive or a revolutionary who believed the American justice system had failed her. But what does the historical record actually establish? We examine the evidence, the court proceedings, the medical testimony presented at trial, the composition of the jury, and the claims that can—and cannot—be independently verified. We also explore the documented history of government surveillance targeting Black political organizations and distinguish those established facts from allegations that remain disputed. This is not a story that can be understood through slogans alone. It requires examining the record, acknowledging uncertainty, and confronting the uncomfortable questions that remain. Assata Shakur died in Havana, Cuba, in September 2025. The debate surrounding her case continues to expose the difficulty of separating established facts, contested evidence, political interpretations, and the enduring consequences of a criminal conviction. #AssataShakur #BlackHistory #BlackPantherParty #revolution ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Black Culture Unlocked is about truth—real history, real stories, and real awareness.
