What Rome Didn't Want You To Know About Cleopatra

Cleopatra VII belonged to the Ptolemaic dynasty, founded by Alexander the Great’s Macedonian general Ptolemy, and according to Plutarch she was the first of her family to learn the Egyptian language. Her coins show a strong hooked nose and prominent chin, and Plutarch wrote that her beauty was “not altogether incomparable,” crediting her power instead to her conversation, her presence and her voice. The famous carpet never appears in Plutarch, who describes a bedding sack carried to Caesar by Apollodorus the Sicilian. In 32 BC Rome declared war on Cleopatra alone, and most of what we know about her was written by the side that defeated her. Even her death by an asp is uncertain: Plutarch admits no one knew the truth, and her tomb is still being searched for at Taposiris Magna by archaeologist Kathleen Martinez.
