248,000-Mile Toyota Prado Was Falling Apart… 20 Days Later, It Looked Like New

Some cars are valuable because they are rare. Others are valuable because of the memories they carry. This 20-year-old Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, with about 248,500 miles, was sent to us by a longtime owner who had taken it through mountains, rivers and countless adventures. After two decades on the road, the SUV was still running, but years of hard use had left their mark everywhere. The carpets smelled, the sound-deadening material had cracked and deteriorated, the suspension bushings were worn out, several chassis components were leaking, and the frame was packed with years of dirt and grime. So we decided to bring it back to like-new condition. The engine was completely disassembled, measured and rebuilt. Usable components were ultrasonically cleaned, while the chassis was stripped down, sandblasted and powder-coated. Worn bushings and ball joints were replaced, and every fastener was refinished. The body was then stripped, carefully sanded and repainted with BASF automotive paint. Inside, the old sound insulation was removed and replaced, while the seats and headliner were fully reupholstered.
