Description

How do you lift and refloat a 50,000-ton cruise ship lying on its side? After the Costa Concordia disaster off Giglio Island, engineers carried out one of the most complex maritime salvage operations ever attempted. Giant underwater platforms, steel caissons, cables and hydraulic systems were used to rotate the wreck upright and eventually refloat it before it was towed to Genoa for dismantling.
