The Colossal Guardians of Ancient Assyria

Nearly 3,000 years ago, colossal stone guardians stood at the entrances of the magnificent royal palaces of Nimrud, one of the greatest cities of ancient Assyria, located in present-day Iraq. Known as lamassu, these extraordinary sculptures combined the body of a bull or lion, the wings of an eagle, and the head of a human. They were believed to protect royal palaces from evil forces while symbolizing the power and authority of Assyrian kings. Nimrud, known in antiquity as Kalhu, became the capital of the Neo-Assyrian Empire under King Ashurnasirpal II in the 9th century BCE. Its monumental palaces were decorated with intricate stone reliefs, inscriptions, and enormous guardian sculptures. Over the centuries, these remarkable monuments endured periods of abandonment, deterioration, and destruction. In recent years, archaeological and conservation teams have worked to recover, document, and restore surviving fragments, preserving an invaluable part of Mesopotamia's cultural heritage.
