In 2016, a 21 year old cancer patient in China trusted the top result on a Baidu search. That listing wasn't ranked on merit, it had been sold to the highest bidder. His family borrowed 31,000 dollars for a treatment that never had a real chance, and he died two months later.
That scandal was the beginning of the end, but it isn't why Baidu just posted its worst numbers in company history. Advertising revenue is down 19%, profit is cut in half, and 91 million users left the app in a year. Chinese advertisers aren't spending less either. Tencent's ad revenue is up 21% over the same period. The money didn't vanish, it moved.
In this video I explain who actually absorbed twenty years of Chinese search traffic, how a shopping guide app nobody took seriously became the country's real answer engine, and why Baidu made the exact same AI bet Google just made, with a completely different outcome.
