Description
In early 1967, Jimi Hendrix was still a relatively unknown name in Britain, but he was about to embark on one of the strangest package tours of his career.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience found themselves sharing the bill with the Walker Brothers, Cat Stevens and Engelbert Humperdinck. On paper, it was an incredibly bizarre combination, with Hendrix's loud, psychedelic and increasingly experimental sound standing in contrast to the polished pop and easy-listening acts that dominated the bill.
The tour quickly became a frustrating experience for Hendrix and the Experience. They were given short sets, often had to play to audiences who had come to see completely different kinds of performers, and struggled to make an impact on a bill that wasn't exactly suited to their music.
And yet, the tour also produced some unforgettable moments, including Hendrix setting his guitar on fire during "Fire" at the opening night in London.
In this video, we'll take a look at the strange story behind this unlikely package tour, how Hendrix and his band dealt with the situation, and why one of the most exciting new acts in rock found themselves opening for some of the biggest pop stars of the day.
It may have been a disastrous experience for Hendrix, but it makes for one hell of a story.
