Description
🔧 Everything I learned fixing HVAC for 25 years, in one plain-English book.
📘 THE HVAC SURVIVAL GUIDE - get it here: https://raydutton.com
Your air conditioner is still earning its keep in this heat. But in a few weeks, when you go to shut it down for the season, you have a choice to make, and it is worth about a couple thousand dollars. Do it the way most folks do - throw a cover over it, cut the power, walk away feeling responsible - and there is a real good chance that the first warm morning you switch it back on, the fellow who comes out says the one word you never want to hear about the most expensive part in the machine. The compressor. Or you spend five minutes now, the right way, and it wakes up next spring like nothing happened. Twenty-five years I spent on these systems, the fall shutdowns and the spring startups both, for the same companies that mail out that spring repair quote.
The 3 fall-shutdown moves, cheapest first:
Take it out of cooling for the season (so a warm afternoon can't wake it in cold air) - free
Do NOT wrap the whole unit (moisture rot + a mouse mansion in the wiring) - cover the top only
Do NOT cut the power all winter (it kills the crankcase heater and slugs the compressor come spring) - leave it on for a few dollars a month
And the reason nobody ever warned you: a fall mistake makes no sound. It waits all winter and hands you the bill in spring.

2:47 #2 Covering the unit (the mistake that feels responsible)
4:29 The right way: cover the top only
5:25 Why nobody warns you about this
6:03 #3 Cutting the power (the compressor killer)
6:40 The crankcase heater nobody mentions
7:34 How the spring startup slugs the compressor
8:50 No heater, or you already cut the power? Do this
9:47 The full ledger: your side vs theirs
10:41 The trick is always time
Tell me in the comments how you have been putting yours away - cover on or off, power on or off, and how old the unit is. I read every one and I will tell you straight if you have been setting up a rough spring.
Subscribe, there is a lot of season left.
