Description
The history of Ukraine stretches back far beyond the Russia-Ukraine war. From 1.4-million-year-old stone tools and the ancient Scythians to Kyivan Rus, the Cossacks, the Soviet Union and the war in 2026, this documentary explores how Ukraine survived centuries of conquest, political upheaval and struggles for independence.
Why have so many empires fought to control Ukraine? And how has Ukrainian identity survived when its borders, rulers and political systems have changed so many times?
Long before modern Ukraine existed, early humans were making stone tools near Korolevo. Later, mammoth-bone settlements appeared on the frozen steppe, Trypillia communities built enormous farming settlements, and Scythian horse warriors controlled parts of the Black Sea region.
By the ninth century, Kyivan Rus emerged as one of medieval Eastern Europe's major powers, with Kyiv at its political center. The Mongol invasion devastated the city in 1240, but the history of the region continued.
The Cossacks established their own military traditions. Bohdan Khmelnytsky led the uprising of 1648. Russian imperial rule restricted Ukrainian cultural and political autonomy, while writers such as Taras Shevchenko helped preserve and develop Ukrainian national identity.
The twentieth century brought revolution, the struggle for independence, the Holodomor famine, Nazi occupation, the Holocaust in Ukraine, the deportation of Crimean Tatars and the Chornobyl disaster.
In 1991, more than 90% of voters supported Ukrainian independence. Yet that independence would face another major test.
Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 and launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. By 2026, Ukraine was still fighting a devastating war while struggling to protect its people, territory and future.

- The Mongol invasion of Kyiv in 1240
- The Zaporizhian Cossacks and Bohdan Khmelnytsky
- The Russian Empire and restrictions on Ukrainian language
- Taras Shevchenko and Ukrainian national identity
- Ukraine's 1917–1921 struggle for independence
- Stalin, collectivization and the Holodomor
- World War II and the Holocaust in Ukraine

But the deeper story is not simply about armies and borders.
It is about the land, the people who lived on it, and their ability to preserve language, culture and identity through generations of change.
**Empires came and went. The soil remained. And so did the people.**
