The History of Afghanistan in 19 minutes

The history of Afghanistan goes far beyond the "Graveyard of Empires." Before Britain, the Soviet Union and the United States fought here, Afghanistan was a crossroads connecting some of Asia's greatest civilizations. How did an ancient center of trade, Buddhism and powerful kingdoms become the battlefield of three major foreign powers — and why did they eventually leave? This animated history documentary explores Afghanistan from ancient Bactria and Alexander the Great to the modern Afghan state, Soviet invasion, American withdrawal and Taliban rule in 2026. Thousands of years ago, lapis lazuli from Afghanistan's mountains traveled to distant civilizations. Greek kings ruled Bactria, the Kushan Empire connected vast trade networks, and Buddhist monasteries flourished around the enormous Buddhas of Bamiyan. Later, Ghazni became an imperial capital. The Ghurids expanded into India. Mongol armies devastated major cities, while Timurid Herat became a center of Persian art and scholarship. From Kabul, Babur launched the campaign that established the Mughal Empire. In 1747, Ahmad Shah Durrani established the foundations of the modern Afghan state. Then came Afghanistan's struggle with outside powers: the British Empire, the Great Game, the Anglo-Afghan Wars, the Soviet-Afghan War, the rise of the Taliban and the twenty-year American intervention. **This documentary covers:** - Ancient Afghanistan, Bactria and Alexander the Great - The Kushan Empire and the Buddhas of Bamiyan - Islam, Mahmud of Ghazni and the Ghurid Empire - Genghis Khan, Timurid Herat and Babur - Ahmad Shah Durrani and the founding of modern Afghanistan - The British Empire and the Anglo-Afghan Wars - Amanullah Khan, Afghan independence and the monarchy - The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 - The mujahideen, Afghan Civil War and the rise of the Taliban - September 11 and the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 - The American withdrawal and Taliban return in 2021 - Afghanistan under Taliban rule in 2026 **Why is Afghanistan called the Graveyard of Empires?** The answer is more complicated than mountains defeating foreign armies. Politics, local resistance, international rivalries and the weaknesses of foreign-backed governments all shaped the country's history. And the famous nickname tells only half the story. Long before Afghanistan became known for war, it connected civilizations, religions, cultures and trade routes stretching across Asia. This is the history of Afghanistan — not just the empires that fought over it, but the people who lived and built civilizations there. #HistoryOfAfghanistan #AfghanistanHistory #WorldHistory #History
