Description
Ten places in Ohio the Mafia used to control, from a Cleveland barber chair to the one room at the center of it all.
In 1928, Cleveland police raided a downtown hotel and arrested twenty three Mafia men who had come in from all over the country. Twenty years later, the Mafia went back to that same building and closed the door behind it.
Last time we covered the places Ohio's mob controlled, the whole underworld. This time it's only the Mafia, the sworn Italian American society called La Cosa Nostra, and the crews it grew out of. In Ohio it did its business in places you'd never look at twice. A boss who held his Sunday meetings in suburban barber shops. A cigarette vending company whose money led all the way to the Stardust in Las Vegas. A golf course in Geauga County where a man was shot on the sixteenth hole, now a park with a sledding hill.
Then the union halls. A Teamsters local run by a man who was secretly talking to the FBI while he climbed to the top of the whole union, and a laborers' local taken over by a man convicted as a teenager in the killing of two Cleveland police officers. Then the early footholds: an Akron boss who put a price on the city's police, a New Year's Eve payroll robbery historians call the birth of the Cleveland family, and a Marion fruit store where, by one local account, federal inspectors bored holes through the wall to watch the meetings in the back. Then Little Italy, and the social club on Mayfield Road where politicians came to dinner.
Real names, real dates, from the public record.
