Description

In the 1960s, rising waters from Lake Nasser threatened to submerge Egypt’s Abu Simbel temples. Engineers cut the enormous rock-carved monument into more than 1,000 numbered stone blocks, moved them to higher ground, and reconstructed the temple inside a specially engineered artificial mountain. By 1968, Abu Simbel stood again — while its original location disappeared beneath Lake Nasser.
