Description

One day after baptizing 175 people, a 36-year-old Catholic priest was killed. Father Crépin Martial Monga, vicar of St. John the Baptist Parish in Zémio, in the Diocese of Bangassou, Central African Republic, was known for his commitment to peace, reconciliation, and the protection of vulnerable people. On June 28, Father Monga administered the Sacrament of Baptism to 175 candidates, including 160 displaced Christians who had been temporarily accommodated in Zapay because of ongoing violence. The following morning, June 29, he accompanied the newly baptized to the banks of the Mbomou River. It would become his final pastoral act. Later that evening, around 6:40 p.m., while returning to the parish residence, armed men opened fire on his vehicle. Father Monga was struck in the head and died instantly. No group had claimed responsibility for the killing, and authorities had not identified suspects in the reporting used for this video. Father Monga was also a tireless peacemaker. He coordinated the Local Committee for Peace and Reconciliation in Zémio, working for dialogue, social cohesion, reconciliation, and the protection of civilians. His life reminds us of the words of Jesus: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.” — Matthew 5:9 And: “The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” — John 10:11 May Father Crépin Martial Monga's witness inspire us to choose faith over fear, forgiveness over hatred, and peace over violence. 🙏 Pray for the Church in the Central African Republic. 🙏 Pray for persecuted and suffering Christians. 🙏 Pray for priests serving communities affected by violence.
