Description

📕 My honest car, ute & 4WD guides — buy the right one, then keep it alive 👉 https://aussiemechanicgreg.com I went looking for somebody who'd cut a GWM Cannon Alpha in half. Nobody has — not publicly, not the ute and not the wagon it shares a chassis with. So I say that up front instead of inventing it. But four different groups of engineers HAVE had one apart: the crash lab that destroyed several and published every score, the Australian team that pulled the suspension out and rebuilt it, the two official recall notices that say exactly which loom rubs on what, and GWM's own published weight figures — which are where the real surprise is. Hook the maximum trailer on a plug-in Alpha and you've got 85kg left for people and gear. What I cover: - What's actually underneath: the Tank 500 ladder frame, and a five-link coil-sprung live rear axle instead of leaf springs - The new 3.0L diesel: 170kW/620Nm, nine-speed, 7.3L/100km — and no AdBlue tank to strand you - The change that went the other way: full-time 4WD became part-time (with three diff locks) - The subtraction nobody does: GVM 3,495kg, GCM 6,745kg, 3,500kg tow — and why that leaves 85kg - Why this is an industry-wide problem, not a GWM one — run the same sum on your own ute tonight - The ANCAP result in full, and what that 8-point penalty actually measures - What two recalls tell you about how it's built (both were wiring looms, not engines or chassis) - The three things that'd still stop me buying one with my own money FACT-CHECK: No published engineering teardown of the GWM Cannon Alpha, the Tank 500 or GWM's Hi4-T system exists — the script says so rather than pretending otherwise. Verified figures: 2026 Cannon Alpha 3.0L turbo-diesel 170kW/620Nm with a nine-speed automatic, 7.3L/100km claimed combined (down from 8.9), no AdBlue, part-time 4WD with front, centre and rear diff locks, kerb 2,550kg, payload 945kg, GVM 3,495kg, 3,500kg braked towing, $58,990 (Lux) and $63,990 (Vanta) drive-away, in showrooms from mid-September 2026; the outgoing 2.4L made 135kW/480Nm (CarExpert, carsales, Drive). Cannon Alpha Ultra Hi4-T PHEV: 300kW/750Nm combined, 37.1kWh battery, 115km electric range, tare 2,761kg, kerb 2,810kg, GVM 3,495kg, GCM 6,745kg, payload 685kg, 3,500kg braked tow, 350kg maximum tow-ball download (carsales research). 2024 2.4 diesel Lux: kerb 2,489kg, GVM 3,310kg, GCM 6,555kg, payload 821kg (Outback Travel Australia). A published GCM for the 2026 3.0L diesel could not be confirmed and is not stated. The Cannon Alpha is built on the Tank 500 platform with a five-link, Panhard-rod, coil-sprung live rear axle; suspension and steering are tuned locally under GWM's AT-1 programme led by former Holden ride-and-handling engineer Rob Trubiani (4X4 Australia, carsales, Chasing Cars). ANCAP: five stars, 2024 datestamp, covering the 2.0L petrol hybrid and 2.4L diesel — 84% adult occupant, 93% child occupant, 82% vulnerable road user, 81% safety assist, full points for driver side impact and front passenger frontal offset, seven airbags, and a maximum 8.00-point vehicle-to-vehicle compatibility penalty that ANCAP applies across the ute segment for mass and size; quote from ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg (ANCAP media release). Recalls: REC-006410, August 2025, 2,458 examples of the 2023–2025 Cannon Alpha, electronic power steering wiring harness may contact the driveshaft, risk of sudden loss of power steering and/or engine shutdown; REC-006516, December 2025, 1,445 Cannon Alpha PHEV, Tank 300 hybrid and Tank 500 vehicles, high-voltage harness shielding ring may not be properly grounded (vehiclerecalls.gov.au). Ownership: 7-year/unlimited-km warranty on private and ABN use, reducing to 7 years/150,000km for paying-passenger use; 5 years capped-price servicing; roughly 115 dealers with servicing at about 84 (GWM Australia, GoAutoNews Premium). Sales: GWM sold 52,809 vehicles in Australia in 2025, up 23.4%; Cannon Alpha 2,524, up 38.8% (GWM Australia, Drive). One-year used-price averages suggest single-digit percentage depreciation on PHEV variants; one year on a new nameplate is not a guide to year five. Prices and figures are indicative and vary. DISCLAIMER: General information and my honest opinion — NOT purchasing, mechanical, towing, insurance or legal advice. No manufacturer, importer, dealer or repairer named here is accused of any wrongdoing, and nothing here is a claim that any vehicle on the road today is unsafe. Recalls quoted are from published Australian government notices; check whether any recall applies to a specific vehicle and whether the remedy has been carried out. Confirm your own GVM, GCM, payload and tow-ball limits against the vehicle's compliance plate and owner's manual before you tow anything, and have a qualified mechanic carry out a pre-purchase inspection and a PPSR check before you buy.
