Description
Odysseus survived the Cyclops, survived the Sirens, survived Scylla and Charybdis and lost his entire crew anyway, not to a monster, but to a herd of cattle.
After escaping the strait between Scylla and Charybdis, two warnings point to the same danger ahead: the island of Thrinacia, sacred to Helios, the sun god. His cattle graze there, untouched and undying, watched day and night. Tiresias had said it plainly back in the underworld: leave the herd alone, and the men might still see Ithaca again. Touch them, and none of them will.
Odysseus doesn't want to land at all. His crew, exhausted and out of supplies, begs him to. He agrees on one condition: every man swears an oath never to touch the cattle. For a while, the oath holds even as the South Wind turns against them and traps the ship on the island for a full month, food gone, hunger closing in.
This is where the oath breaks.
While Odysseus sleeps, Eurylochus makes his case to the starving crew: better to die once at sea than waste away slowly on land. They slaughter the sacred cattle, sacrifice what they can to the gods, and eat. The signs turn against them almost at once the hides crawl across the ground on their own, and the meat bellows on the spits like living animals, roasted and raw alike. They eat anyway. For six days.
Helios calls out to Zeus and threatens to abandon the sky itself unless the crime is punished. When the ship finally sails, Zeus answers with a thunderbolt. The mast shatters, the hull tears apart, and every man aboard is thrown into the sea. Only Odysseus survives, clinging to a fragment of the wreck, adrift for nine days before washing ashore alone on Calypso's island.
A warning given. An oath broken. A crew erased and the one man who kept his word was the only one left to carry it home.
I made this entirely in reconstructed Ancient Greek phonetic pronunciation not Modern Greek built around instruments like lyre, frame drum and modern instruments. Built with a mix of ai and human work as all my creations for the last past year.
This is part of the ODYSSEY series, a song for every major episode of Homer's epic, each one built on the original Ancient Greek and the real mythology behind it.
