Description
Every word Jesus spoke from the cross is recorded in the Bible. But no single gospel carries all seven. Deep Made Simple lays out all seven sayings, assembled from four accounts, in the order scholars have held for centuries, with the Greek behind each sentence and the Psalms beneath each cry.
The seven last words of Jesus are scattered across Luke, John, Matthew, and Mark. Luke carries three. John carries three. Matthew and Mark share the one they both recorded. Nobody standing at Golgotha heard the complete sequence. What we have is a harmony, assembled from four eyewitness accounts, built around a darkness that lasted three hours and a clock that everybody agrees on.
What unites all seven is stranger than any single saying. Every one of them is spoken to somebody. He talks to the men driving the nails, to a condemned criminal hanging beside Him, to His widowed mother, to His Father in the dark, to His own thirst, to the completed work, and finally back to His Father at the end. Not one of the seven is a speech into the air. He dies talking to people.
Two of the seven are direct quotations from the Psalms. One of them, the cry of desolation at the ninth hour, opens Psalm 22, a prayer that describes the scene He is hanging in, written centuries before Rome existed. That is not coincidence. That is the whole point.
