Description

Picture a climber high on a wall of rock. No rope. No harness. Nothing clipped to anything. Just fingertips on cold stone, the edges of his shoes on holds the width of a coin, and beneath his heels, hundreds of meters of empty air. This is free soloing. One slip, one hold breaking loose, and there is nothing to catch the fall. Most climbers never do it, and the few who do usually stay well below their limit, because the punishment for a single mistake is absolute. But Jonas Hainz was not most climbers. He was one of the most gifted young soloists in the Alps and the son of a legendary alpinist. Months earlier he had free soloed a four hundred meter wall that the climbing world could barely watch. And then, on an ordinary autumn day, on a mountain he knew well, the unthinkable happened. These are the last moments of free soloist and elite climber Jonas Hainz.
