Description
#Clovis #Archaeology #FirstAmericans
It sits in a shallow dip in the flat ranchland of eastern New Mexico, about halfway between Clovis and Portales, just off Highway 70. Thirteen thousand years ago, it was a spring-fed pond ringed with marsh, where mammoths came to drink. Today, it's a dry draw, an old gravel pit, and a scatter of excavation trenches under an enormous sky. It is the place where an entire ancient culture got its name. And if you drove past it on the highway, you wouldn't see anything at all—just a pale scar in the caliche where the grass gives out.
