Description

NASA is spending $20 billion to send robots to the Moon before astronauts arrive. Their job: grade the terrain, sinter landing pads from lunar dust, deploy solar arrays, and build the skeleton of a permanent base at the south pole. But the Moon destroys machines. Razor-sharp dust grinds through joints. Temperatures swing by over 500 degrees. The 14-day lunar night kills anything that cannot keep itself warm. And when something breaks, the nearest repair shop is 240,000 miles away. This documentary examines every layer of what a Moon base actually requires, from site preparation and power grids to habitation and life support. It surveys the real robotic hardware under development right now, including NASA's IPEx excavator, ICON's regolith sintering system, the ARMADAS autonomous assembly robots, CADRE's cooperative rover team, MoonFall terrain-mapping drones, and the full-scale Lunar Terrain Vehicles headed for the surface before the first crew lands. Then it confronts the five threats that could stop them all: dust, thermal cycling, power loss, the autonomy gap, and the impossibility of repair. The answer to "could robots build a Moon base?" is not yes or no. It is something more honest and more interesting than either.
