Description
What happened to the three sons of a Georgia peddler after the two who owned Macy's said goodbye in Jerusalem in the spring of 1912? Lazarus Straus left Otterberg in 1852 and wheeled goods between Georgia plantations, and within fifty years his sons owned the largest store in the world.

The family's Confederate ties and Lazarus Straus's ownership of enslaved people are stated plainly in the video, drawn from standard reference works. They belong to the record, and they sit alongside the family's later philanthropy rather than being softened by it.
The popular story that Nathan Straus held a Titanic ticket, along with the brothers' scripted "last argument," was left out as legend. The widely shared "saved a million children" figure was replaced with the documented estimate of more than 400,000, which a New York health official gave for Manhattan and the Bronx.
