📖 Get The Old Mexican Way, every old way written down: https://oldmexicanway.com
You lit the pumpkin candle on Sunday night, and by bedtime there was a gray shadow on the wall above it, in the shape of a flame.
My mother never kept any of these 28 things in her house. For most of my life I thought that was only because we were poor. It turns out she was ahead. And this is not a video to scare you: the dose and the years matter more than the headline. She did not have a safer house because she knew more science. She had a safer house because she kept less.
THE 28, ROOM BY ROOM (what she never kept, and what we know now):
🛋️ THE LIVING ROOM
1. The old vinyl blinds with the long cord (old imported ones could carry lead; the cord loop is at a toddler's neck height)
2. Scented candles burning every night (soot on the wall; December is the worst month for candle fires)
3. The oil diffuser next to the cat (many oils, tea tree above all, are hard on cats and birds)
4. Stain guard sprayed on the sofa (the old formulas were forever chemicals; she used a washable cotton sheet)
5. Old painted furniture from before 1978 (lead has no safe amount; test it, keep it out of the nursery)
🍳 THE KITCHEN (none of the 13 from my kitchen video)
6. Oven cleaner in the spray can (mostly lye; she used a bicarbonato paste overnight)
7. Plastic pyramid tea bags (heat is when plastic talks to your food; loose manzanilla and canela)
8. The old box of microwave popcorn (the old bags were coated; palomitas in the pot)
9. Anything that is not food, in a bottle that looks like food (never bleach or weed killer in a soda bottle)
10. Detergent pods on the low shelf (they look like candy to a child; move them up)
🧺 THE LAUNDRY ROOM
11. Fabric softener and dryer sheets (the coating and children's sleepwear; vinegar in the rinse, and the sun)
12. Scent beads (fragrance is a top skin allergen; clothes that smell like sun and Zote)
13. Microfiber cloths (they shed plastic threads in every wash; cotton trapos)
🛏️ THE BEDROOMS
14. Mothballs in the closet (la naftalina works by being toxic to breathe; clean and sealed instead)
15. The phone charging under the pillow (not the brain story, the heat and fire story)
16. The pest strip hanging over the bed (read the label, it does not belong where people sleep)
17. The humidifier with last week's water (the machine is fine, the old water is not)
18. The old drop-side crib waiting for the grandbaby (banned since 2011; buy this one new)
🚿 THE BATHROOM AND THE DRAWERS
19. Aerosol dry shampoo (the benzene recalls; cornstarch from the pantry)
20. The receipts in the purse (BPA and BPS come off on your fingers; say no thank you)
21. Greta and azarcón (lead powders for empacho; this one is not folklore)
22. Loose button batteries in the junk drawer (a swallowed one burns in two hours; a jar on the high shelf)
23. The smoke alarm with the battery taken out (one per level, replaced every ten years)
🚗 THE GARAGE AND THE YARD
24. The gas can next to the water heater (the vapor rolls along the floor to the pilot light)
25. The grill, the brasero and the generator indoors (carbon monoxide has no color and no smell)
26. Drinking from the garden hose (most were never made for drinking water)
27. Old treated boards in the garden and the fire pit (the old lumber held arsenic; never burn it)
28. Old tires lying in the yard (a mosquito nursery; the white-painted planter full of soil is fine)
The honest word: nothing here is a reason to panic. The lead, carbon monoxide, batteries, cribs, mothballs and gasoline are settled science. The plastic in the tea and the cloths, and the forever chemicals, are still being counted, and I tell you which is which. If you think a child swallowed something, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 (in the US). If the child is not breathing right, call 911.
Who profits: first they sold you the candle, the spray, the pod and the plastic. Now they sell you the "non-toxic" version of every one, with a refill. Nobody makes a dollar from a woman who opens a window.
Tonight, do one: every loose battery out of the junk drawer and into a jar on the highest shelf, then the battery back in the smoke alarm.
Which one is in your house right now, and what did YOUR mother refuse to keep in hers? Tell me, and your county. I read every one.
