Description

What if 300 samurai fought the Battle of Thermopylae instead of the 300 Spartans? Same pass, same Persian Empire army, same job: hold the Hot Gates for three days. A hoplite killed at the length of a spear, but a samurai kills at eighty yards with a bow taller than he is, so the whole fight comes down to one number: 7,200 arrows, with nobody making more. Mike takes the Spartan vs samurai question through the real battle as Herodotus recorded it, day by day: the Phocian Wall, the first assault by the Medes, Xerxes sending in Hydarnes and the Persian Immortals, and the goat path Ephialtes sold to the king. Every chapter ends with a Hot Gates survival tier, tracking the arrow count against the same timeline King Leonidas faced, right down to the hillock of the last stand and the Persian arrowheads dug out of it in 1939. If you like military history that puts a what-if on real ground, subscribe to NerdHistory and tell us in the comments: four volleys left and the back door open, do you send men out the East Gate or keep every blade on the wall?
