Description
Horse swimming pools provide a form of equine exercise that combines water resistance with buoyancy, helping horses train without the repeated ground impacts of running.
Buoyancy supports the horse’s body while its legs push against the water. Gravity still acts, but the water provides an upward force that reduces the need for its limbs to bear weight.
Swimming challenges the muscles, heart and lungs. Carefully managed programmes can improve cardiovascular fitness and aerobic capacity, making it a useful addition to training for suitable horses.
Equine swimming and underwater treadmills provide different workouts. Swimming removes hoof contact with the ground, while a water treadmill allows walking against resistance with adjustable water depth. Trainers and veterinary teams choose the approach according to the horse’s condition and exercise goals.
