Fleming's Mistake — The Accidental Discovery That Saved Billions

In September 1928, Alexander Fleming came back from holiday to a laboratory bench of forgotten petri dishes. One of them had gone mouldy — and around the mould, the bacteria were gone. This is the true story of the accidental discovery of penicillin: the Scottish boy who noticed things, the promise made in a field hospital during the First World War, the ten patient years at St. Mary's Hospital, the mistake that changed everything, and the Oxford team — Florey and Chain — who turned a laboratory curiosity into a medicine that changed healthcare forever.
