Description
A supermassive black hole has been found more than 30,000 light-years from the center of its galaxy, and astronomers are still trying to understand how it got there. NASA’s Swift observatory helped reveal this wandering black hole after it was caught collapsing a star in a distant galaxy about 750 million light-years from Earth.
Supermassive black holes are usually found at the centers of galaxies. So why is this one so far from the galactic core?
In this cinematic journey through the Universe, we travel from Earth across intergalactic space to a distant galaxy, known as WISEA J014656.04−152214.7, and investigate one of the strangest supermassive black holes discovered so far.
With an estimated mass of about one million Suns, this supermassive black hole was detected through a tidal disruption event (TDE), when its immense gravitational forces tore apart a passing star. The resulting burst of radiation allowed astronomers to detect an otherwise invisible object lurking far from the center of its host galaxy.
But the biggest mystery remains: how did a supermassive black hole end up there?
It may have been displaced during a violent galactic merger involving multiple black holes. Or it could be the surviving core of a smaller galaxy that was stripped apart by its larger neighbor. At the moment, astronomers cannot say for certain.
And that raises an even bigger question.
How many wandering black holes could be hiding throughout the Universe, far from the places where we expect to find them?
This video is a cinematic scientific visualization based on current astronomical observations and research. The galaxy and black hole visuals are simulations and artistic representations, not direct photographs of the objects.
