Description

What if the Moon was replaced by something completely different? In this extreme space simulation, we replace the Moon with Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, a pulsar, and even a stellar-mass black hole. Here, we explore what these objects would look like at the same distance as the Moon, from space and from the surface of Earth. What would Mars look like in our night sky? How enormous would Jupiter and Saturn appear? And what happens when we replace the Moon with a neutron star or Cygnus X-1? This simulation is designed primarily as a visual experiment. For the planetary scenarios, we intentionally do not model the gravitational, tidal, or long-term orbital effects of placing these objects at the Moon's distance. The systems are kept stable so we can focus on what these extreme objects would look like from Earth. For the pulsar scenario, we explore what happens when the physics is allowed to take over. The simulation features Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, the pulsar PSR J0437−4715, the black hole Cygnus X-1, and its massive blue supergiant companion, HIP 98298. How would Earth look with something completely different orbiting beside it? Beyond the Rings.
