Description
An extraordinary whale encounter unfolded off the coast of New Jersey when a large school of fish suddenly gathered at the surface beside a fishing boat carrying 2 fishermen.
Moments later, a massive whale erupted from beneath the surface with its mouth open, capturing fish in a dramatic feeding manoeuvre. As the whale dropped back into the water, its enormous body struck the side of the boat, creating a frightening close call.
This behaviour is known as lunge feeding, a technique used by humpback whales and other rorqual whales. They accelerate towards dense schools of fish with their mouths wide open, engulfing enormous quantities of water and prey in a single movement.
Their expandable throat grooves allow their mouths to accommodate huge volumes of seawater. The whale then pushes the water back out through its baleen plates, trapping the fish inside to swallow.
Along the New Jersey coastline, humpback whales frequently feed on Atlantic menhaden, small schooling fish that gather in dense groups near the surface. These feeding events can bring enormous whales surprisingly close to fishing vessels.
The encounter demonstrates both the incredible feeding abilities of whales and the dangers of being too close when a multi-tonne animal suddenly breaks the surface.
