Skjaldborg (The Shield Wall) | Old Norse Viking Music | Battle Song

“Skjaldborg” means “The Shield Wall,” the ancient battle formation where one warrior’s life depended on the strength of the man beside him. This song is about brotherhood under iron rain, standing shoulder to shoulder when fear, blood and steel close in. The Old Norse lyrics are written for the comments, with the English translation below. English translation: Hold! Hold! Side by side! Hold! Hold! Man beside man! Shield against shield we shall stand, man beside man in darkness and steel. You hold your shield over my shoulders, I hold mine strong above your head. One may fall, but all still stand, the wall is broken if a brother gives way. My life lies in the palm of your hand, my blood waits behind your back. SHIELD WALL! SHIELD WALL! Shield over my brother! SHIELD WALL! SHIELD WALL! We stand or fall together! Axes bite, arrows sing, the earth is red beneath the rain of iron. I think I am falling. No! I hold you! Shoulder to shoulder to Hel or victory. If I fall in the first row, step over me, you must stand. Carry my name into the next storm, the wall lives, though a brother dies. SHIELD WALL! SHIELD WALL! Shield over my brother! SHIELD WALL! SHIELD WALL! We stand or fall together! Hold! Hold! Side by side! Shield rim by shield rim! Hand by hand! SHIELD WALL!
