Description

Lake Powell DROPS To 22% - Water So LOW A Lost Canyon Is REAPPEARING On September 26th, the surface of Lake Powell stood at 3,517.71 feet above sea level. It held 5,134,640 acre feet of water in a reservoir built to hold more than 23 million. That is 22 percent full. It is 182 feet below where it stands when the dam is working as designed. It is 27 feet lower than it was one year ago.And here is the part that no one is putting on a postcard.A reservoir at 22 percent does not simply go down. Something comes up.When the gates of Glen Canyon Dam closed in 1963, the water backed up 186 miles and buried a canyon system with more than 100 side canyons. For 60 years, it was the floor of a lake. What is climbing back out of it right now is not a geological curiosity. It is a landscape, a river, a set of rapids, trees that were standing before the Beatles recorded their first album, and steps cut into sandstone by people who were here 900 years before anyone conceived of a dam. None of it was destroyed by the water. It was covered. And now it is not.
