Description
Only 7 in 100 Americans said "no religion" in 1972. Today it's close to 3 in 10. This video traces the full fifty-year story behind that number — and the detail most headlines about it leave out.
We follow the three forces behind America's rise of religious "nones": generational replacement (each generation starting further from religious affiliation than the last), the fusion of religion and politics since the Moral Majority in 1979, and the geography that kept entire communities — the rural South, historically Black Protestant congregations, Hispanic Catholic parishes, evangelical megachurches, and Latter-day Saint wards — closer to where the country stood decades ago.
The real finding isn't that America stopped believing in God. National surveys show most of the "nones" still do. What actually declined is institutional participation — the pew, the membership roll — not private faith itself. It's less a story of a nation losing religion, and more one of faith quietly separating from the institutions that once carried it. 🕊️
