Description
Before October 1, five things change for older Americans — and no office has to warn you first. Here is each one, and the phone call that fixes it: SNAP's yearly raise (and why an old "no" may now be a "yes"), the new work rule for anyone 55 to 64 under your roof, the property-tax windows nobody announces, the Medicare booklet already in your mailbox, and the winter heating money seniors can get first.
WHO TO CALL
• Your state SNAP office — ask for the income limit for the year that starts October 1, and how to report your medical costs
• Your county assessor — ask for this year's senior exemption filing window
• California: State Controller's Property Tax Postponement, 1-800-952-5661 (opens October 1, first come, first served)
• Your Medicare plan (number on your card) — if your Annual Notice of Change is lost
• Your state energy assistance office — ask when seniors can apply for heating help (Illinois LIHEAP hotline: 1-833-711-0374)
