A coal-fired steamship still crosses Lake Michigan every summer. A ferry is still pulled across a river by hand. Drive-in screens from 1953 and 1964 still light up after dark, and a bowling alley still runs on pinsetters installed in 1957.
In this video, we count down 13 Michigan towns where a piece of the 1950s and 1960s is still open today, ranked by population from the largest to the smallest: from Coldwater, a city of almost 14,000 people, to Honor, a village of 337.
Along the way: the SS Badger in Ludington, the Grand Haven Musical Fountain, the Portage Lake Lift Bridge in Houghton, the Vogue Theatre in Manistee, the 52-foot Hiawatha in Ironwood, the Cross in the Woods in Indian River, Mystery Hill in the Irish Hills, the Saugatuck chain ferry, the Mackinac Bridge and the Cherry Bowl Drive-In.
Many of these places are seasonal, so check the hours before you make the drive.
Which of these towns would you visit first? Tell us in the comments.
