Description

A deep-sea camera at 9,000 feet caught the deepest-diving mammal on Earth doing the one thing that kills it — racing toward the surface too fast — because something below it was rising. The Cuvier's beaked whale dives deeper than anything else with lungs: nearly 10,000 feet, on a single breath, for over two hours. Down is its refuge; nothing is supposed to follow it there. We know these whales will flee to their own deaths — sonar frightens them so badly they surface too fast and die of the bends, stranding on beaches — but at 9,000 feet there was no sonar. There was something else. Every animal before this fled down, into the deep, to escape. This one fled up, toward the pressure that kills it — because for the first time the thing to fear wasn't above it. It was below. Was it a spooked animal the technician was right to cut — or did the world's deepest diver just show us there's a floor beneath the floor, and something living under it?
