What Happened to Snake Eyes Before He Wore the Mask?

Before the mask. Before the silence. Snake Eyes was a very different man. In this video, we uncover the disturbing story behind Snake Eyes’ mask, his lost voice, and the mission that changed him forever. Long before he became the silent, masked warrior of G.I. Joe, Snake Eyes fought in Vietnam, survived devastating personal tragedies, trained alongside Storm Shadow, disappeared into the mountains with Timber, and eventually returned to G.I. Joe. But the real mystery begins with G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #144 — “Snake-Eyes: The Tale Untold,” written by Larry Hama. In this forgotten Marvel Comics story, Snake Eyes still has his face and his voice when the mission begins. Then a catastrophic helicopter accident changes everything. While trying to save Scarlett, Snake Eyes is caught in the flames and suffers devastating injuries. But even after losing his ability to speak, he refuses to abandon the mission. What follows reveals another hidden connection involving George Strawhacker and Snake Eyes’ lost family — and a rescue that would happen more than once. This is the story of what happened to Snake Eyes before the mask, before the silence, and before he became the character millions of G.I. Joe fans remember. If you grew up watching G.I. Joe in the 1980s and 1990s, you may know Snake Eyes. But you probably never knew the full story behind his mask. #SnakeEyes #GIJoe #GIJoeClassics #LarryHama #MarvelComics #80sCartoons
