Description
The Appalachian Ghost Town Rangers Won't Patrol After Dark
Deep in Mingo County, West Virginia, there is a ghost town called Nolan that was once home to thousands of coal miners and their families. Today it is swallowed by trees, its company store cracked open by vines, its row houses collapsing into their own foundations — and the rangers who patrol the Hatfield-McCoy Trail system have an unwritten rule: they work until the light goes, and then they leave. This video traces what buried Nolan, the brutal history of the West Virginia Mine Wars, the killing of Sid Hatfield on a courthouse steps, the Battle of Blair Mountain, and what the historical record and living memory both say happened inside that store building in the winter of 1921 — the winter the coal company came to settle its accounts. That is where the rangers' rule was born. That is what the hollow has never let go of.
