Description

In 1972, a Methodist minister inside the National Council of Churches published a book most of his own denomination didn't want to hear: Why Conservative Churches Are Growing. Dean Kelley argued that churches asking little of their members would keep losing them — and over the next fifty years, the numbers proved him partly right. This documentary follows what actually happened to Kelley's prediction. We trace the collapse of the mainline — the United Methodist Church, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Episcopal Church, and United Church of Christ, each down 60-75% from their 1960s peaks — alongside the stricter churches Kelley pointed to as the model: the Southern Baptist Convention, the Assemblies of God, the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and Jehovah's Witnesses. But the story has a twist even Kelley didn't see coming: the same Southern Baptist Convention that once proved him right has now declined for nineteen straight years. This isn't a story about which theology is correct. It's about what a church asks of its people — and what happens, decades later, when it asks too little or too much. 📖 If this kind of careful, evidence-based research matters to you, subscribe to **The Caelustra** 🔔 for more deep dives into the American religious experience.
