Description
You cleaned it. Properly, the way I've been teaching. Every hard surface in the room, twice. And there is still a faint something you cannot place, and it is quietly driving you mad.
I know exactly where it is, and it is not where you have been looking.
MY BOOK: The Spotless Method, the whole system written down in the order I'd actually do it.
spotlessmethod.com
Every video I have made has been about hard things. Tubs, tiles, glass, cabinets, ovens, filters, machines. But the smell of a house lives overwhelmingly in the SOFT things, and I have never once talked to you about them.
Here is the difference, and once you see it you cannot unsee it. A hard surface holds smell on top, where a cloth reaches it. Fabric holds smell INSIDE, where nothing you spray will ever reach. That is why a spotless room can still smell. And it is why spraying something scented on a curtain makes it worse rather than better, because you have just added a second smell on top of the first, inside the same sponge.
Curtains. Sofa cushions. Throw pillows. The blanket over the arm of the chair. Carpet. And the biggest piece of fabric in your whole house, which almost nobody thinks of as fabric at all.
THE TEST, and do this before you watch the rest. You cannot smell your own soft furnishings, because you live inside them. So press your face into the back of the sofa and breathe in. Better still, carry a cushion outside into fresh air for a minute and then smell it. Away from the room, the fabric tells you the truth immediately.
What's inside:
• Why fabric holds odor when a hard surface does not
• The seasonal fabric refresh, four times a year, and what goes in it
• Curtains, and the ones that will be RUINED by a washing machine
• Cushion covers, and the trick that stops them shrinking so they never fit again
• Upholstery, and how to do most of it sitting at the kitchen table
• The mattress, the largest piece of fabric you own, and the twice-a-year treatment
• Carpet, which remembers everything, and why vacuuming was never going to be enough
• Scents that whisper instead of shout, and why piling more on always reads as covering something up
• THE ORDER, because doing these in the wrong sequence means doing the carpet twice
⚠️ THE HONEST PART: some fabric has simply reached the end of its life. Some curtains, some carpet, some mattresses are done, and no washing brings them back. In a hotel, soft furnishings are on a replacement schedule for exactly that reason, and when a room started to smell despite being cleaned properly, the answer was never a stronger product. Something soft had come to the end. I would rather tell you that now than have you spend a Saturday on something that was never coming clean.
⚠️ AND BEFORE YOU WASH ANYTHING: check the label. Most lined curtains will not survive a machine, because the lining shrinks at a different rate to the face fabric and the whole panel puckers permanently. If there is no label, or you are unsure, do not gamble on something you like. Vacuum it, air it outside on a dry day, and take anything valuable or lined to a cleaner. A ruined pair of curtains costs far more than the cleaning would have.
Dry everything completely. A damp cushion or a not-quite-dry carpet is worse than what you started with, and it grows exactly what I have spent two videos warning you about.
SAFETY: taking curtains down is a ladder job, and it is not yours. Nothing on a ladder, nothing on a chair, both feet on the floor. Have somebody take them down and rehang them in one visit, and while they are up there they can raise the rod to the height I talked about last week, so you get both jobs from one favor. Wet carpet is heavy and slippery, so never haul an extraction machine up or down stairs. And do not flip a mattress alone, though the part I actually recommend needs no lifting at all.
I read every comment. Go and press your face into the back of your sofa right now, or take a cushion outside for a minute, and come back and tell me honestly what you found. I suspect a few of you are about to have a small revelation.
New videos every week on keeping a lovely home after 60, gently, and in the right order.
