Description
⚔️ Berlin, 16 March 1888: on a freezing morning, the funeral of Kaiser Wilhelm I closes the founding chapter of the German Empire and opens what German historians would call the Year of Three Emperors. This documentary reconstructs the imperial cortège with AI, from historical studies and records of the period.
🏛️ Follow the immense procession as it leaves the Berliner Dom, moves along Unter den Linden past the Zeughaus, the Neue Wache and the University, and passes beneath the black-shrouded columns of the Brandenburg Gate, where the gilded Latin inscription Vale Senex Imperator, Farewell Old Emperor, hangs from the entablature. Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, Field Marshal Helmuth von Moltke, the new Kaiser Friedrich III and the young Prince Wilhelm walk behind the coffin, alongside the Prince of Wales, King Albert of Saxony and a delegation of European royalty.
📜 The film then enters the Charlottenburg Mausoleum for the final rite beside the sarcophagi of Queen Louise and Friedrich Wilhelm III, and traces the political meaning of the day, the fragile succession of 1888 and the twenty-six years that would lead from this ceremony to the summer of 1914.
