Description
On June 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy took Martin Luther King Jr. out of the Oval Office and into the White House Rose Garden.
What Kennedy told King there would set off a chain of events that would reshape the civil rights movement—and eventually become part of the FBI's campaign against King.
Kennedy wanted King to distance himself from two advisers: Stanley Levison and Jack O'Dell, both of whom had ties to the Communist movement. King repeatedly asked for evidence. Instead, the pressure intensified.
Within weeks, O'Dell was gone. Levison cut himself off from King, only to continue advising him through an intermediary. When the government discovered that King and Levison were still communicating, Attorney General Robert Kennedy authorised FBI surveillance of King's home and the SCLC office.
Those wiretaps would eventually expand into hotel-room surveillance, producing recordings that the FBI used against King. In 1964, an anonymous package containing surveillance material and a threatening letter was sent to King. The Church Committee later established that the package came from inside the FBI.
But this story is bigger than the FBI. It is about what happens when pressure from outside forces a movement to police itself.
From Stanley Levison and Jack O'Dell to Bayard Rustin and John Lewis, this video examines four moments when the civil rights movement was forced to decide who could stay—and who had to be removed, silenced, or pushed aside.
And behind all of it is one difficult question: When protecting a movement requires sacrificing the people inside it, how much can that movement lose before it begins changing itself?
This is the story of the Rose Garden conversation—and the people the civil rights movement was pressured to remove.
