This Mercedes S600 Had a $30K Repair Bill… Then We Rebuilt the V12 From the Inside Out

After 18 years, this Mercedes-Benz S600 finally returned for a serious second chance. With roughly 160,000 miles on the odometer, the V12 had lost much of its former smoothness. Cylinder damage, excessive oil consumption and severe vibration had turned the engine into a major restoration project. Three years earlier, the owner had already spent the equivalent of nearly $30,000 USD on repairs. This time, we decided to go much deeper. The V12 was removed and completely disassembled. Heavy sludge and carbon buildup covered the internal components, while abnormal piston wear pointed to problems with the previous cylinder machining. Precision CNC cylinder boring, ultrasonic cleaning and new aftermarket pistons were used to bring the engine back into spec. The suspension was rebuilt as well, including failed hydraulic seals, worn bushings and damaged components. The exterior received BASF waterborne paint and fresh clear coat, while the all-aluminum body was carefully refinished. Inside, the S600 received new insulation, odor treatment, restored walnut trim and fresh black leather upholstery.
