Description

What It Was REALLY Like to Live Inside Versailles Subscribe to the channel: @LostGrandeurUK Between 3,000 and 10,000 people lived inside the Palace of Versailles on any given day, in a building of some 2,300 rooms with well over 1,000 fireplaces that still could not keep it warm. In the great frost of 1709, wine froze solid and bottles burst beside the fires at the king's own table. Yet for all the gold and the 357 mirrors of its famous gallery, this palace of thousands had almost no toilets, and by one estimate barely a hundred or two people had easy access to a proper latrine. The most magnificent house in the world was also one of the coldest, most crowded and foulest-smelling places its own nobles ever had to live. This is what it was really like inside. Subscribe to the channel: @lostgrandeuruk In this video, we talk about the daily reality of living inside Versailles at the height of the French court, including the levée ceremony where dukes competed for the honour of handing the king his shirt, the etiquette of stools and scratched doors, the 22 departments of the royal household, the king's fixed timetable from mass to midnight, the evening apartments and their ruinous gambling, the notorious lack of sanitation, the court's fear of bathing, the killing cold of 1709, the fortunes spent chasing royal favour, and the fall of October 1789. 🔔 Subscribe so the next lost world we walk through finds you the moment it opens. 💬 Comment where you're watching from and tell me which would have broken you first inside Versailles, the endless cold, the crushing crowds, or the smell. 📢 Share this on Facebook, Reddit, or a group chat that loves history.
