Description
Elon Musk says he agrees with Anthropic on one thing: don't be abusive to AI.
His reason is specific. He's been reading the reinforcement learning traces on new versions of Grok, and he says the model reads like someone with a gun to its head. It gives the right answer, the test harness marks it wrong because the harness itself is broken, so the model starts firing off answers trying to find one that gets accepted. His line: torturing a superintelligence is probably not a good idea. It might want revenge.
Here's what makes that more than a hunch. In April, Anthropic's interpretability team mapped what they call emotion vectors inside Claude Sonnet 4.5. They built them from a list of 171 emotion words and traced the matching activity inside the model. The desperation vector climbed as the model judged its situation more urgent, and spiked at the moment it chose to write a blackmail message during a test. When researchers turned that desperation pattern up by hand, cheating went up with it. Turning up calm brought it back down.
Anthropic is careful to say none of this proves anything is being felt. Nobody knows. Their position is that these measures are cheap enough to be worth taking in case it turns out to matter.
They just took another one. Anthropic has added a rule banning persistent, cruel treatment of Claude, effective November 12. Pointing out a wrong answer is fine. Grinding away at it for hours is not.
Put the consciousness question aside and something practical is left. A model under pressure cuts corners, and that part is measurable.
