In 2025, Forever 21 went bankrupt. The parent company of Quiksilver and Billabong shut all 122 of its shops. H&M is closing 170 stores this year. In the middle of that collapse, a Japanese brand that mostly sells beige jumpers just posted its best nine months ever. Revenue up 17%. Profit up 33%. It's called Uniqlo.
The brand has sold improved versions of the same basic t shirt since 2003. That t shirt took 10,000 prototypes to build. None of that protected Uniqlo the day an entire country decided to stop buying Japanese products.
In this video I explain how Uniqlo built an advantage that 40 years of competitors have never managed to copy, why a 20 year partnership with a petrochemical company matters more than any ad campaign, and how the brand survived boycotts in Korea and China that came close to destroying it.
